In the Course there are two forms of almost everything. One is used by the ego and the other by the Holy Spirit. There are two forms of forgiveness. There is the ego’s forgiveness-to-destroy which makes errors (illusions, miscreations, ego projections) real first, and then deigns to pardon them. How do we make illusions real? We listen to the ego and its insane logic about the necessity of illusions and then we give our faith (power of wanting) and belief to them.
Then there is the Holy Spirit’s forgiveness-for-salvation which stands in truth and then dispels (causes to vanish) illusions (miscreations, ego projections) by withdrawing all belief or investment in them. How do we withdrawal all investment from illusions? We undertake a process of correction or undoing by looking at the ego thought system with the Holy Spirit. He shows us everything we have made and why we made it. In the light of reason, we see the insanity, and let illusions fall away.
Denial is a decision not to know or not to remember. There are two forms of denial, the ego’s denial-to-hide and the Holy Spirit’s denial-for-correction. Denial-to-hide entails hiding the truth by denying it. Denial-for-correction entails denying the reality of illusions by withdrawing investment or belief in them and placing belief in reality instead.
The world you see must be denied, (Denial-for-correction – the world’s reality (not its seeming appearance in the illusion) must be denied by withdrawing our investment in it and placing our investment in reality instead) for sight of it is costing you a different kind of vision. You cannot see both worlds, for each of them involves a different kind of seeing, and depends on what you cherish.(what you are invested in) The sight of one is possible because you have denied (Denial-to-hide – standing in the “righteousness” of the unreal, you deny the real world to hide it) the other. Both are not true, yet either one will seem as real to you as the amount to which you hold it dear. (have investment in it) And yet their power is not the same, because their real attraction to you is unequal. (T-13.VII.2:1-5)
That is why the Bible speaks of “the peace of God which passeth understanding.” This peace is totally incapable of being shaken by errors (illusions, miscreations, ego projections) of any kind. It denies the ability of anything not of God to affect you. This is the proper use of denial. It is not used to hide anything, but to correct error. It brings all error into the light, and since error and darkness are the same, it corrects error automatically. ( T-2.II.1:9-14)
The task of the miracle worker thus becomes to deny the denial of truth. (Denial-for-correction – deny the reality of the denial of truth – withdraw belief in it by placing belief in reality instead) (T-12.II.1:5)
The body (a miscreation, ego projection caused by the denial of truth) is merely part of your experience in the physical world. (the illusion, the dream) Its abilities can be and frequently are overevaluated. (The body is a learning tool. Used by the ego, it hurts. It is used by the ego as a weapon against the Universal Purpose, to demonstrate the “fact” that the separation occurred. Used by the Holy Spirit the body heals. The Holy Spirit uses the body solely for communication. (healing) It is nothing. The only meaning it has is acquired by the use to which it is put. It is in and of itself, neutral.) However, it is almost impossible to deny its existence in this world. (It does seem to exist in the dream, like any other miscreation.) Those who do so are engaging in a particularly unworthy form of denial. The term “unworthy” here implies only that it is not necessary to protect the mind by denying the unmindful. (The body is a miscreation and therefore unmindful. We do not need to protect our mind from miscreations, just our belief in them. We do not need to deny miscreations which were made from denial and are themselves denials. We need to give up our investment in them. We do not need to deny the body’s existence, we need to give up our investment in it.) If one denies this unfortunate aspect of the mind’s power, (that it can miscreate) one is also denying the power (of creation) itself. (T-2.IV.3:8-13)
How do we give up our investment in the body? Jesus is our model. What did he do? He did not participate in the world as if it were real. He let go all investment in it. He turned over everything he had made, his world, his body and his personality self (his miscreations) to be undone that he might be a tool of the Holy Spirit. He emptied his mind of all ego/separation thoughts and learned to think only with the Holy Spirit. He let the Holy Spirit speak through him. He let his body be used only as a communication tool. In order to get home to God, that is our path too. Only the Holy Spirit knows the way.
“Many are called but few are chosen” should be, “All are called but few choose to listen.” (T-3.IV.7:12)
